RIVERS, FISH PONDS & HERITAGE
… or a gentle ride through the northwestern New Territories….

Their origins can be traced back to the Qin Dynasty, but the visible history of Yuen Long and Kam Tin only goes as far back as the 17th
century, when markets were set up in the heart of Yuen Long and the Tang clan started erecting a number of substantial number of temples,
ancestral halls and schools in Kam Tin….

This leisurely ride links a number of heritage structures in Yuen Long and Kam Tin by way of the bird-rich wetlands of Nam Sang Wai and Tai
Sang Wai.

Having picked up our iron horses from a small shop near the MTR station, we cycle through modern  Yuen Long to reach a minor contributary
to the Kam Tin River. The ride is smooth, flat and virtually free of traffic. Once, we have conquered the single footbridge that separates us
from the wetlands, we ride on single lane roads along rivers and between fish ponds into Tai Sang Wai and stop when requested to check out
the bird life….

At Fung Kat Heung, we find ourselves traversing a maze of light industrial sites and garages specializing in vintage cars in order to reach the
vegetable fields below the volcanic Kai Kung Leng Ridge. This fertile plain is where we find the old twin villages of Shui Mei Tsuen and Shui
Tau Tsuen; a Tang-Clan stronghold for more than 600 years. Having been around for so long, the Tangs have erected a rather impressive
number of interesting buildings, including ancestral halls, schools and temples.

After a good look around some of these, we will visit the village café for refreshments – and perhaps a quick noodle or rice lunch….

After this break, we dedicate the last third of our ride to birdwatching as we cycle on quiet back roads along the shallow Kam Tin River and
into the Nam Sang Wai wetlands. The mangrove-clad shores and the - mostly - abandoned fish farms provide ideal conditions for a rich and
varied bird life. Recent sightings include Cormorants, Grey Herons, Wigeons, Teals, Northern Shovelers, White Wagtails and Black Kites.

We pause for a final refreshment at a store above one of the old fish ponds before boarding Hong Kong’s most unique ferry for a river
crossing that will greatly shorten our trip back to the bike shop in Yuen Long.

A large number of buses connect Yuen Long with Kowloon and Hong Kong Island every few minutes, so you must feel free to take the time to
explore this bustling market town before heading home….
