CITY TO SEA
This easy-to-moderate hike will take you from the crowded suburbs of Sha Tin to the waterfront promenade in Sai Kung town via the lush
woodlands and abandoned villages of Ma On Shan Country Park.
After a short bus ride from City One station in Sha Tin, our walk begins with a gentle climb through the extensive banana groves and small
vegetable farms around Fa Sam Hang. These days, farmers are few and far between, but this hike will uncover plenty of evidence that the
woodlands and hills were farmed extensively not so long ago...
After a quick dip down to the recently revived village of Mui Tsz Lam, we turn westwards into the bird-song filled woodlands of the Ma On
Shan Country Park and begin the gradual, but steady, climb towards Mau Ping and the Ngong Ping plateau. The ancient moss-covered
boulder paths lead us along small streams and through a number of decaying old villages. Some of which might just hide a surprise or two...
Your reward for completing this long, but relatively gentle, climb is a truly spectacular panorama over Port Shelter, Hebe Haven and the many
islands off Sai Kung. Better still: We will find a grassy spot for a snack break to truly savour this wonderful view....
Once rested, we begin the descent towards Sai Kung. Where the ascent was nicely shaded, the descent is very much out in the open, so we
are able to soak in the rather dramatic scenery surrounding us....
Once we have left the country park, we walk through typical modern New Territories villages to reach the bus terminus by the public pier in
Sai Kung town which marks the "official" end of the hike.
However, you are also welcome to join your guide for lunch at one of the popular waterfront seafood restaurants, before heading home....
