SUNSET PEAK - Westwards
Lantau Trail Stage 2 + a little extra
Having reached Lantau Island by air-conditioned fast ferry, we begin this reasonably challenging hike by following nice level
concrete paths through Mui Wo and its ever-expanding suburbs to the foothills of the rather impressive mountain range that
is visible from the pier. Along the way, we pass old watch towers and a few more modern neighbourhoods….
Leaving civilization behind us, we climb gently along an old village footpath up to Nam Shan, where our challenge starts in
earnest. Ascending Sunset Peak involves tackling quite a few stone steps, but the higher we get, the more the path levels
out, and the views, first over Silvermine Bay and then over Pui O beach, are simply magnificent.
Near the top, there is a high plateau, where many a hiker probably would not mind staying overnight, if only they could locate
a key to one of the old stone cabins located amongst the old grazing grounds. Much to the regret of many a developer, this
highland is now part of Lantau South Country Park, so it would take some influence peddling to be allowed to build an
access road - not to mention an awful lot of money.
We make a slight detour to actually reach the summit of Sunset Peak which, for unknown reasons, has been omitted from
the official trail.
After a longish break at the summit to savour the moment, we make our way around the freely roaming cattle and begin our
descent towards the bus stop at Pak Kung Au; a pass on Tung Chung Road which connects the modern giant dormitory town
on north Lantau with the sandy beaches and small quiet villages on its southern side.
The bus will take us straight to the MTR station in Tung Chung and the train back to the city.
