MTR 180: CHEUNG SHA WAN, SHAM SHUI PO & MONG KOK
History, market streets and temples....

At a first glance, Cheung Sha Wan, Sham Shui Po and Mong Kok appear to be little more than grotty working class neighbourhoods slowly
being redeveloped with tall gleaming glass towers replacing lift less low-rise tenement blocks and grimy dark factory buildings. Open your
eyes a little wider, however, and you will find a treasure trove of historical sites lurking just below the surface – sometimes quite literally….

Most available sites date back to the first half of the 20th century, but our first port of call harks back almost two millennia. While preparing
land for the construction of public housing estates 1955, workers stumbled across a tomb from the Han Dynasty. We will have a quick look at
this micro-museum, before checking out the housing estates.

Strolling through the streets of Cheung Sha Wan, we will pass several interesting historical buildings on our way to Mei Ho House, the last
remaining building of the original Shek Kip Mei Resettlement Estate, part of which has been turned into a small housing museum.

Continuing into Sham Shui Po, we visit market streets, housing estates, temples, an old bazaar threatened by closure, and the site of a POW
camp, before briefly stopping for refreshments.

Crossing Boundary Street, we enter Kowloon, where we look at a couple of quite unique houses, before exploring yet more market streets
and a couple of Mong Kok’s slightly “naughtier” streets.

The walk ends at Mong Kok MTR Station around 12:45 pm, giving you the choice between catching the train home or grabbing lunch at one of
the myriad of eateries nearby.
