MTR 180: SHEUNG SHUI & FAN LING
Walled villages, parks and temples....

Though a lot has changed since the Liu family settled near the confluence of the Beas and Indus Rivers at the end of the 17th century, it is still
possible to find remnants of the area’s history. Indeed, if you look carefully, you will find a surprising number of 17th, 18th and 19th century
structures still standing. This leisurely paced walk will introduce you to most of these, but we will also explore more modern sites of interest
surrounding the Sheung Shui and Fan Ling MTR stations, including markets, parks, housing estates and temples….

Passing any number of small-scale traders repacking their goods for export to China, we begin the walk with a visit to the conglomerate of
the 9 villages now referred to as Sheung Shui Heung, where we will have a good look around the moat-ringed walled village of Wai Loi Tsuen
and – at least – one of the old ancestral halls in the area.

Heading south, we stroll past the old Sheung Shui Police Station and through the bustling market streets to which Sheung Shui owes its very
existence. We then traverse the vast green oasis of the North District Park to reach the Pang clan stronghold of Fan Ling Wai; another walled
village dating back to the Ming Dynasty.

There should be time for a refreshment at one of the village cafés before we continue southwards, past modern sports venues, to finish the
walk with a visit to the impressive Fung Ying Seen Koon Taoist temple. Founded in 1929, the temple is believed by many to be the dwelling
place of immortals….

The walk ends at Fan Ling MTR Station at 12:30 pm giving you a choice of catching a train home or grabbing a hearty and cheap lunch at the
nearby Cheung Wah Estate Cooked Food Centre.
